Instant Payments, Sibos & FIDA: That’s your topic mix

The financial industry is entering a pivotal new era: with the EU’s Instant Payment Regulation, instant transfers are set to become the new standard. At the same time, FIDA is gaining importance in the regulatory landscape. For banks and financial service providers, this isn’t just about technical upgrades – it’s about unlocking fresh opportunities for innovation and competitive edge.

At Qwist, we’re not just observing these changes – we’re helping shape them. That’s why we’ll be at Sibos 2025 in Frankfurt, contributing our expertise and joining leading voices from across the sector to discuss the future of payments.

Instant Payments: Why Real-Time Is the New Standard Today

This is NOT a robbery! ‘Goods for cash, immediately’ – is rather an old promise that is making a digital comeback. By 2027, 25% of all cashless payments are expected to be made in real time. The change is being driven by the new Instant Payments Regulation Package (IPR): real time is no longer an extra, but standard – with clear deadlines and binding interoperability.

Who benefits, what technical hurdles banks and FinTechs have to overcome, and why real-time payments are more than just a trend.

Read about it now in our blog.

What Are Real-Time Payments (Instant Payments)?

Qwist at Sibos 2025 – Spotlight on Our Discover Talk!

From 29 September to 2 October, the international finance community will gather in Frankfurt for Sibos 2025 – the leading global industry event where decision-makers shape the future of finance.

This year, we’re excited not only to have a stand on-site but also to take the stage: on Wednesday, 1 October at 1:30 PM, our Vice President Product, Marc-André Bewernik, will speak on the Discover Stage.

His topic: the impact of FIDA.

The title of his talk is:
“From Obligation to Opportunity: How FIDA Prepares Banks for the Era of Customer Centricity”

FIDA is set to become one of the most important upcoming regulations in the European financial sector. In this 30-minute session, Marc will show that FIDA is not just a regulatory requirement – it’s a real opportunity for banks to:

  • Build an intelligent data infrastructure
  • Unlock new innovation potential
  • Gain customer trust

Today’s customers expect banking that is as fast, flexible, and personalised as their favourite digital platforms. Fail to meet these expectations, and you risk losing them with just one tap.

Whether before or after the Discover Talk, we’d love to connect with you – not only about FIDA or Instant Payments, but all things Open Banking and Open Finance. Visit us at stand DISL 50 on the 2nd Floor, right next to the Discover Stage.

We can’t wait to see you in Frankfurt!

And Finally… Some Fun Facts About Instant Payments

“Faster than the speed of light”

Did you know that Instant Payments in Europe are technically so fast that a transfer under the SEPA Instant Credit Transfer (SCT Inst) standard must be completed in no more than 10 seconds – and in practice often takes less than 1 second?

That means your money can sometimes arrive with the recipient before you’ve even hit the “Send” button – or at least, it feels that way!

Another fun fact: in the first pilot projects for Instant Payments, there were cases where people thought they had accidentally sent money twice – simply because the funds reached the recipient instantly, and they were already replying “Thanks!” within seconds.

This initially caused a few minor panic moments – and a handful of extra calls to the bank.
